Our history

2017

Seppe Salari, a co-founder, discovered black soldier flies and began breeding them at home. Seppe crafted a custom LED system for the flies and built his first light cage. Intrigued, he shifted his studies to entomology at Wageningen University.

2018
Jason Kiem, intrigued by edible insects seeks to establish a company in this emerging field. After connecting with Seppe, an entomologist, through a YouTube video, they join forces. With the addition of Jesse Turkstra as the third founder, they start their journey by establishing a company focused on BSF production.

2019
The renovation of an old dairy farm into an R&D facility for black soldier flies commences, funded by a grant from the European Union. This transformation marks the beginning of a promising venture into sustainable insect research and development.

2020
The opening of InsectoCycles R&D center dedicated to black soldier fly technology marks a significant milestone in the companies development.

2021
The strategic decision to concentrate solely on black soldier fly reproduction is made, leading to the development of initial prototypes.

2022
The successful installation of the first InsectoCages at customers' facilities marks the beginning of a global rollout across four continents.
